Poems for June 2025 Reading Poetry Anew will meet via Zoom. Please register using the "Sign Up" button to receive the Zoom invitation and poem packet by email (if you have not previously registered). All are welcome! For new attendees, please click here for Mary's guide on how to read a poem: Poetry Guide Dip or dive into the pleasures of poetry. This informal course, led by Mary Zoll, will include poetry readings and reactions, discussions of the patterns and techniques used in the poems, and perhaps some intellectual understanding of the poems. This class meets one Tuesday a month, at 10 a.m. via Zoom. Open to anyone interested in experiencing poetry. Welcome to Gleason Knitters! We are a group of local Massachusetts knitters and crocheters who meet on the first Friday of the month at Carlisle’s Gleason Library from 10:30 – 12:00. Join library staff for a book discussion of Some Strange Music Draws Me In, by Griffin Hansbury, in honor of Pride Month. Copies of the book will be available for check-out at the Library's main circulation desk. About the book: It’s the summer of 1984 in Swaffham, Massachusetts, when Mel (short for Melanie) encounters Sylvia, a tough-as-nails trans woman whose shameless swagger catalyzes Mel’s dawning trans self-awareness. But it also sparks the fury of townie Swaffham and throws Mel into conflict with her mother and best friend. Decades later, Max (formerly Mel) is on probation from his teaching job for (ironically) defying speech codes around trans identity. Back in Swaffham, he must face his own role in the disasters of the past. With the charged teenage emotion of Claire Messud’s The Burning Girl and the propulsive social interrogation of Rebecca Makkai’s I Have Some Questions for You, Hansbury reckons with gender and class as he delivers a timely and captivating narrative of self-realization amid the everyday violence of small-town intolerance. Registrants will receive a link to access the Zoom Webinar via email.* Join Professor Elena Conis, author of Vaccine Nation: America's Changing Relationship with Immunization and Acting Dean of UC Berkeley’s School of Journalism, for a discussion about measles and the modern history of vaccination in the United States. She’ll be joined by Hillary Johnson, MHS, Senior Epidemiology Advisor to Local Health for the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, who’ll discuss what measles is and how we track it today. The discussion will be moderated by Dr. Louis Fazen, III, MPH, pediatrician and founder of the Global Health Committee at the Massachusetts Medical Society, former faculty member at UMass Chan Medical School, and a local Board of Health chairperson, along with Scott Podolsky, MD, Professor of Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Director of the Center for the History of Medicine at the Countway Library. Kick off summer reading with a cold treat! Stop by the library’s front lawn to grab your Bingo sheet and a Reading Log, and enjoy an ice pop. All books are free, however the Friends welcome donations to support Library programming (click here to donate online via Paypal or Venmo @friends_22bedford) The Book Swap will be held on the Library Lawn from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. In the event of inclement weather, the Book Swap will be held inside the Library beginning at 10 a.m. This Book Swap will feature adult fiction and all genres of children's and teen books. Donations will only be accepted during designated drop-off hours: Tuesday, June 17th, 3 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, June 18th, 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 20th, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Please note that the Library is closed on Thursday, June 19th, in observation of Juneteenth. Bring your stuffed animal for our special pajama story time at the library! Wear your pajamas, listen to bedtime stories, and make a fun story time craft. Afterward, kiss them goodnight and leave your stuffed animal for the sleepover. Your stuffed animal will read great stories, play games, and make some new friends! (If you don't want to leave your stuffed animal for any reason, you are welcome to attend the pajama story time and  take your stuffed animal back home with you.) Return the next day at 1:30 p.m. for your stuffed animal. We’ll send home a link to a slide show of the antics your animals were up to during the night later in the week! Are you wondering how to help their kids thrive in a digital world? Gain the confidence and tools you need to tackle tech head-on with our Tech-Healthy Family Formula. This formula provides five steps parents can take to help reduce screen time, restore family time, and finally feel peace of mind. Parents will learn how to:  Create a family tech plan with their kids  Take a slow-tech approach to introduce technology  Teach their children about digital dangers and distractions About Andrea: Andrea Davis is a former secondary ed teacher turned screen time navigator. She is the founder of Better Screen Time where she shares family-tested ideas from the (tech) trenches as a mom of five. She is on a mission to help parents worry less about tech and connect more with their kids. Andrea is the author of Creating a Tech-Healthy Family and is certified by the Digital Wellness Institute. The Party Band describes themself as "your friendly, neighborhood, mass-brass punk-funk army from Lowell, MA." An almost 20–piece brass band, the Party Band embodies homegrown and unplugged fun. Their mission is to bring people together, celebrate the gift of being alive, and make the world a better place through the joys of quality live music in a way that is accessible to everyone. Originating in Lowell, MA, The Party Band has traveled the country blasting brass for fun, festivals, community events, and schools since 2013. They have recorded three albums of original brass music inspired by the sounds of New Orleans and folk music from across Planet Earth. The Party Band believes it is important to be a force for good in the world and to celebrate every day like the party that it is. This family-friendly concert is presented by the Carlisle Cultural Council, the Carlisle Council on Aging and Human Services, the Carlisle Recreation Department and the Friends of the Gleason Public Library. Please note that parking at Spalding Field is limited. If the parking is full, additional parking is available at the Gleason Public Library (22 Bedford Road), Carlisle Public School (83 School St.), the Post Office (70 Bedford Rd.), Center Park (Lowell St.), and Town Hall (66 Westford St.), as well as street parking on Church Street and School Street. The  fun event is made possible by a grant from our wonderful Carlisle Cultural Council.The Carlisle Cultural Council is at the center of Carlisle’s vibrant community of artists, musicians, artisans, writers, historians, poets, educators and more. Our vision is to be the catalyst of cultural enrichment in Carlisle.
